Family Stuff
The shopping has commenced!! I bought a few things for the baby. I have to keep reminding myself that she doesn’t need an entire wardrobe when she is 1 day old and that there are lots of other family members on both sides of her family that will be buying things for this first grandchild. Of course everything I bought was on sale, of course I got an additional discount and of course I got free shipping!!
Jake will be going back to school tomorrow. I figured out that the easiest way for him to write is to hold a clipboard in his lap. I think he will be able to manage to take notes in class.
Tara’s 15th birthday was yesterday. I made shrimp scampi for dinner per her request. We also had chocolate cake. Her big gift was a new bike that she picked out herself. Hopefully, it will last a while. Grandma and Sam and I split the cost so we could afford more than a cheap one. Jenny and Jeramiah were here for the weekend and got to celebrate with us.

A Baby Girl !!
The entire family is so excited about Jenny and Jeramiah’s baby girl that is due on June 10th. I am so happy that they decided to find out the sex so I could actually shop for cute stuff!! They are busy choosing a name. They are also hard at work picking out a design for the nursery. Time is going by quickly (even Jenny thinks so). She is 20 weeks and 1 day according to the ultrasound that was done this week. There’s a lot to get done but it’s all happy work!!!!!

Jake is on the road to recovery
Jake went to see an orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday. I brought in Jake’s X rays from the hospital and the dr also had more taken of both his clavicle and thumb. He wasn’t concerned about the clavicle fracture at all. A sling for 4-6 weeks should be all that is required for it to heal. However, one of his thumb fractures was unstable and it caused his thumb to be dislocated from his hand - Jake couldn’t move his thumb at all. The dr tried to manually align it to get it back in position but was unsuccessful. So that meant Jake would need to have pins inserted to keep the bone in position in order to heal and regain full function and strength. He had the surgery this morning and everything went as planned. The picture in the moblog of him with his tongue hanging out is totally faked!! He still had his sense of humor throughout the whole ordeal !! He is home now and recovering in his Go Cardinals red cast!
Jake’s Snowboarding accident
After the previous post, when we went skiing without Jake, he decided to do his chores while we went skiing on Sunday. He also did his Language Arts work and nearly completed a Social Studies project that was just assigned and isn’t due for 3 weeks. Sam and I wanted to reward him immediately for doing so well. Jenny likened this to how you train dogs! Anyway, I took Jake to Sunrise today with Tara and I so he could snow board. It was the first time he’s been allowed to go all season. Shortly after we got there, he met up with a friend and they went off together with the friend’s younger brother. Maybe 15 mins later, the friend calls me on my cell telling me that Jake got hurt and “they are taking him to the first aid station at Cyclone Base”. Knowing Jake as I do and his knack for making a big deal out of the smallest of injuries, I wasn’t immediately overly worried. Tara and I and my friend, Maria and her husband, Dan skied down to where we were told he was being treated which was at the mid-point on the mountain next to the one we were on. When we got there, he was being put on a backboard. He was pale and glassy-eyed and I could tell he was scared and in pain. One of the ski patrol guys said they were treating another patient just over the crest of a hill and Jake came upon them and had to stop fast. He said he saw Jake fall backwards very hard and hit his head on the snow. There was no loss of consciousness and he was moving all his extremities so I knew he was probably going to be OK. They took him in the stretcher sled thingy to the first aid station at the base of the mountain. He was dazed and repeating questions a lot so I was pretty sure he had at least a minor head injury. I make the kids wear helmets and now they all know why!! I have no doubt that had it not been for that helmet, he would have had a severe head injury and been flown by helicopter instead of ground ambulance to the hospital. Anyway, we rode to the hospital in the ambulance. All the while Jake is asking me if Dad knows and complaining about the backboard hurting. As far as real injuries, his major complaint was his right shoulder and left thumb hurting. He had CT scans of his head, neck, back, abdomen and pelvis. He had blood work drawn. He had X Rays of his left wrist and thumb and right shoulder. At first they thought his shoulder was dislocated but it turned out that his right clavicle is fractured inside the shoulder. On the X ray, it looks like part of it is completely broken off. They said it looks like there is ligament damage there but he needs to get an MRI to be sure. His left thumb is fractured in 2 places, 2 separate bones of the thumb. He has a bruise under his right eye and a scratch along the side of it, probably from his goggles. His right arm is in a sling and they put a cast around his left thumb with a soft splint around the wrist and hand. They gave him Morphine through an IV for the pain.
This all happened about 10:30 this morning. He is doing better now. When he first got up to stand he got pale and dizzy and his ears were ringing. I thought he may pass out but he didn’t. The next few times, he just got pale. He is up OK by himself now, but needs help in everything he does. He can’t even pee by himself. I hope he doesn’t have to poop until tomorrow afternoon when Sam will be on Jake “doo"ty.
We will know more on Wednesday after we take him to see the orthopedist.
